Under conditions perceived as threatening, humans resort to a primitive escape mechanism
called the 'fight or flight' syndrome. Hormones including adrenaline are release - our hearts
pump harder, blood pressure rises, we breathe more quickly, and our muscles tense. This
reaction evolved to prepare us for a physical confrontation when we hunted for food or needed
to escape predators.
Unfortunately we have brought this reflex with us from the caves, into the modern age.
Living in our 'concrete' jungle, we do not always have the same opportunity to release this
stress in physical activity. How can we 'fight' our jobs, irrational people, the traffic,

When a person perceives too many threats and too often becomes tense - this stress can be
physically harmful as levels of the 'stress hormone' cortisol, build up in the bloodstream,
resulting in permanent teseness, irritability and poor sleep, as well as actual physiological
damage to the heart and other organs. But ultimately, chronic stress is a condition of the
mind, not of the body. It is the mind's perception of its circumstances that maintains levels
of stress hormones, and if the perception can be changed, the condition will collapse of its
own accord.
